In this edition of “Altavoz,” she tells the story that inspired Agustina soy, a poem she wrote several years ago and is now sharing with us:

Well, Agustina was an enslaved Black woman in the municipality of Tadó who was abused by the man who was then her master or owner, Miguel. And the truth is that this may not have been unusual for the time. However, during the period in which Agustina lived, she had the possibility of reporting him—that is, of expressing that she did not consent to what had happened to her. And, as might be expected, nothing happened.
Miguel did not want Agustina to have the baby because, to him, the idea of a Black woman giving birth to his child was an aberration. So Agustina was beaten until her baby died.
And what Agustina did, as a way of giving dignity to her anger and, literally, answering life with life—because Agustina was killed after this—was not only to set fire to the estate where she was with Miguel, but also to organize fires on different lands that belonged to him.
That is why, today, you can find a statue in Tadó honoring Agustina. And that is why the poem Agustina soy exists.

And I am here to recite a poem I wrote a few years ago called Agustina soy.

I am Cocco Kilele, daughter of Yiris, birthed by Rozana and Paulina, granddaughter of Rosa Cruz, and descendant of Rosa María.

And I am because all of them were.

“Agustina soy” Says:

Soy memoria, memoria tengo
y memoria siento.
Renazco alrededor de elementales, me alzo,
levito sobre la tierra,
pongo mi voz en el aire,
regreso a la raíz.

Yo soy África, madre,
bendita diosa,
descendiente de Shun,
a mis ancestros me aprecio.

Él me quería obligar,
yo me negué
y me comenzó a azotar.

Y a denunciarlo fui
y la corte falló en mi contra.
Inexplicable el dolor.
Golpe tras golpe,

voy a contar.

Imagínense, me fui
